Our thoughts and beliefs have the power to dictate our future. A positive attitude and a belief in ourselves can give us the determination and willpower to succeed despite all obstacles. On the flip side, a negative, 'can't do' attitude and a lack of self-belief has the potential to cause significant damage to our lives. These negative beliefs hold us back from taking charge of our lives and stop us from making the most of opportunities that present themselves.
These five toxic beliefs have the ability to permeate across various aspects of your life and leave a trail of destruction in their wake.
It's Too Late
Far too often we use age and time as an excuse to stop ourselves from taking chances. But the reality is, it's never too late to learn something new, go someplace new or fulfil your dreams. Age is but a number, the real capabilities lie in your 'can do' attitude and positive frame of mind.
Perhaps your dream really isn't achievable, what do you do then? Well you adjust your sails and steer yourself in a slightly different direction! Just because you can't be a professional footballer, it doesn't mean you can't spend the rest of your life doing what you love. Immerse yourself in the local football scene, join the local league, coach junior teams. Adjust your outlook a little and find other ways to follow your passion so you can feel fulfilled within your life.
I'm Not Enough
Yes you are. It's as simple as that. You are enough. I am enough. We are all enough.
Lack of self-belief can be debilitating. If you're constantly doubting your abilities and your worth, you spend precious time and energy preventing yourself from living your life.
Battling self-doubt is a lifelong struggle. When things don't go as we'd planned or we fail in some way, our immediate reaction is to doubt our abilities, that's why it's essential that we regularly set time aside to focus on improving our perceptions of ourselves. Here's some great examples of how to do just that.
And if there are areas of your life that you want to improve on then improve on them. Take a class, read a book, hire a mentor, research online, whatever it is, you can hone your skills if you have the belief in yourself that you can.
My Past Equals My Future
Think you're destined to live the life you always have? Think again. As Henry Ford rightly said, “If you always do what you’ve always done, you’ll always get what you’ve always got.”
If you're not happy with the life you're leading, you have the power to change its course.
By changing the way we think, and ultimately changing our habits and behaviours, we're able to change the outcomes of what we do. The easiest way to do that is by starting small. Focus on improving your mindset, then begin to introduce small habits that will steer you towards the direction in which you want to go. Start small and start today, there's nothing stopping you but yourself.
Failure Is Bad
Failure is disappointing, but failure is also very normal. All of us fail more than once in our lives, it's an unavoidable part of being human. If you allow your fear of failure to stop you from taking chances then you're surely going to miss out on some awesome parts of life. Failure is nothing more than an undesired result and isn't something to be feared.
The key to dealing with failure is to use each experience as a lesson. If you make use of what you learn each time you fail and use every failure as a motivation to try again, you'll continue to improve your skills, build your resilience and you'll be one step closer to success.
People Will Think Badly Of Me
Another unavoidable part of life is the reality that you're not going to be able to please everyone. There will always be those who pass judgment, those people who speak ill of you or make fun of your endeavours. So what? Are you really going to let someone else's opinion stop you from reaching your full potential? This is their problem and something you don't need to concern yourself with.
Worrying about the opinion of others is a tremendous waste of your time and energy, and it's not going to improve your life in any way so it's wiser to just let it go. Surround yourself with people who support and encourage you, those who are there to tell you that you can do it when you're having doubts.
These types of toxic beliefs restrict your life and happiness, and limit your potential. By letting go of them you're opening yourself up to limitless opportunities and a great new outlook on life.
Start by identifying which of these negative beliefs you hold and look at each one objectively. Does believing it help you at all? How does it hamper your life? Would your life change for the better if you stopped believing this? In what ways? What action are you going to take today to change your belief?
Once you start eliminating these toxic thoughts from your life, you'll be opening yourself up to a world of opportunity!
