Why Travel is an Essential Part of my Self-Care Routine

Since I took my first solo trip eleven years ago, travel has been a major part of my life. I prioritise travel before many other usual things in life and head off as often as possible. It's not uncommon for people to make comments to me that it seems as though I'm on a full time holiday, but the truth is that travel is a form of self-care for me and each trip I take is part of keeping myself happy, healthy and resilient.


Travel provides me with endless opportunities to grow, step out of my comfort zone and better myself in a variety of ways which is why I consider it an essential part of my life. I think of travel as a vehicle for self-growth and these are just a few reasons why I feel this way.


Travel is a powerful source of inspiration and motivation which lifts me out of depressive lows and helps me to avoid falling back into despair as often. It re-energises me more than anything else on this earth, and motivates me to do more, see more and be more.


Travel frequently challenges me which builds my resilience more with each and every trip. This inner-strength helps get me through the tough times when my anxiety and depression take hold, and gives me the resiliency to bounce back after each rough patch I go through.


Travel pushes me out of my comfort zone. This has an incredibly positive effect on my self-esteem and self-confidence, which is something that I've struggled with over the years.


Travel takes me away from my problems which allows me to reduce my stress and avoid becoming overwhelmed. When my stress levels creep up, I'm more susceptible to anxiety attacks but by using travel to remove myself from the stresses of every day life, an overwhelming sense of calm washes over me, allowing me to reset myself internally.


Travel helps me to put things into perspective by giving me an endless supply of different ways of life, different belief systems and advice from people from all different walks of life. All of the knowledge and life experience I gain during my trips goes on to shape who I become.


Travel gives me a greater appreciation for life. It never fails to motivate me and breathe new life into me, and it shows me just how much we can get out of life if we want to.


Travel gives me insight into life that I just can't get at home. Seeing how others live inspires me to be grateful for the life I lead and it also opens my mind up to new ways of interpreting life. Being exposed to all of these new experiences, cultures and traditions, gives me a deeper understanding of what's important in life and how I can add more meaning and passion to my own life.


Travel is the perfect excuse for me to spend time alone, working on my own needs. Travelling somewhere new on my own means that I can escape all of my usual commitments and I don't have to adhere to the expectations of those around me. I'm free to do 'me' and relish in my own company for a while.



While travel may not be everyone's cup of tea, it sure is mine. There are so many positive benefits to heading off on an adventure and it undoubtedly impacts my mental health and wellbeing in lots of ways.


So get out there and see the world!
